A court has denied the Kenyan government’s appeal to lift the suspension of a new finance law that would result in huge tax rises.

President William Ruto‘s administration intends to double a fuel tax and other taxes in order to generate revenue for debt repayment and project funding.

After a high court in Nairobi successfully halted the tax hikes, the administration declared a budgetary crisis ten days ago.

The opposition has called for widespread protests against the levies.

When police broke up protests around the country on Friday, three people were killed and hundreds were jailed.
