A group of stakeholders from the North Central region within the All Progressives Congress (APC) gathered at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja to demand the resignation of the National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje.
The protesters, speaking to reporters in Abuja on Thursday, explained that their request was prompted by Ganduje’s recent suspension by a faction of his ward executives and the bribery allegations made against him by the Kano State government.
As they sang songs of solidarity and held up banners with messages like “Ganduje must resign” and “Return the APC chairmanship to North Central,” the protesters urged President Bola Tinubu and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, to consider giving leadership of the party back to the North Central region.
On Tuesday, the Forum of APC State Chairmen expressed their full support for Ganduje by passing a vote of confidence in him.
However, protesters from Concerned North Central APC Stakeholders criticized Ganduje’s continued tenure, stating that it goes against the party’s zoning principle.
The leader of the protesters, Mohammed Mahmud Saba, revealed that unlike the 37 APC state chairmen, the people in the North Central region have issued a vote of no confidence in the national chairman and are calling for his immediate resignation.
Saba emphasized that the people of North Central felt let down when the position of APC national chairman was taken away from them after Senator Abdullahi Adamu left, despite giving Tinubu the third highest number of votes after North West and South West in the 2023 presidential election.
He said, “We, the North Central APC Concerned Stakeholders, have resolved to unanimously agitate for our right and reclaim our mandate, which was handed unto us by the National Convention of our great Party in 2022.”
