The House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to look into the recent prohibition on the manufacturing of alcohol in sachets and tiny bottles.
The action follows a resolution introduced by Hon. Paschal Agbodike and co-sponsored by Hon. Philip Agbese at Wednesday’s plenary session.
“The National Assembly has the constitutional mandate to make laws for the good governance of the Federation,” said Agbodike, citing the 1999 Constitution. He also referenced Articles 88(1) and (2), which allow the House to investigate the acts of entities such as NAFDAC.
Concerns arose after NAFDAC‘s Director-General said in January that the registration of drinks in tiny sachets and bottles would be halted. Existing registrations were slated to expire in January, sparking concerns about job losses and economic hardship.
Agbodike questioned the effectiveness of the restriction, particularly its impact on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). He warned of potential illegal markets and increased unemployment for those involved with the manufacturing and marketing of these beverages.
The House therefore directed the committee to conclude its probe within four weeks and produce a report with suggestions for further action.
