Guinea has boosted its ambitions for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) after securing a 1-0 victory over Gambia at Stade Charles Konan Banny de Yamoussoukro on Friday night.

The match started off slow with few chances in the first half, but Guinea managed to rise above Gambia, who suffered their second consecutive defeat in the group phase.

The only notable opportunity in the first half was a close miss by Mohamed Bayo’s header just before halftime.

However, in the 69th minute, Camara successfully connected with a cross from Morgan Guilavogui, giving Guinea the lead and ultimately sealing their 1-0 win.

This victory propelled Guinea to the second spot in the group standings, surpassing Cameroon, with one more game remaining for each team in Group C.

Aguibou Camara deserved the Man of the Match recognition for his performance when it mattered the most.

His goal was crucial as it separated the two opponents and played a significant role in Guinea collecting the maximum points.

Unfortunately, Coach Tom Saintfiet has led Gambia to two consecutive defeats in this Afcon edition, which is an unwanted streak.

The team has not scored any goals and has conceded four, placing them at the bottom of Group C with very slim chances of advancing to the knockout phase.

Guinea’s last Group C match on Tuesday against Senegal is crucial for them to secure a spot in the knockout phase of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Gambia will be facing Cameroon on the same day, and Cameroon’s performance has been underwhelming thus far.
