Scouts from the best clubs in Europe have taken notice of Girona’s amazing rise to the top of La Liga, among others. This season, Miguel Gutierrez has already been linked to a Premier League transfer; however, after a commanding performance against Barcelona, which included a goal, the attention has been focused twice.
This season, the 22-year-old has started every game at left defence for Michel Sanchez, although that has required him to frequently drop into midfield when Girona has the ball. Earlier in the season, Arsenal was linked to the former Real Madrid left-back, with a release clause reportedly worth between €35 million and €40 million.
In addition to having a 50% sell-on clause that guarantees they will make money off of Gutierrez’s next move in one way or another, Los Blancos can buy him back for €8 million. However, Sport reports that Manchester City is now interested in Gutierrez, which could have a negative effect on Real Madrid.
Real Madrid is already chasing Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich, having signed Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia. Although the City group is one of their three majority shareholders, it is unclear what price Girona would demand from City, even though they have no intention of going after Gutierrez.
In today’s market, Gutierrez is probably worth his release clause, if not slightly less than it. Since this is the first time City has shown a direct interest in signing a Girona player from the first team, they should have an advantage in negotiations and possibly in terms of price.
