Governor Douye Diri has secured a second term as the leader of Bayelsa state, more than 48 hours after the governorship election.
“That Diri Douye of the PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” the Returning Officer, Prof Faruq Kuta declared Diri as the winner after several breaks and adjournments during the exercise.
The candidate from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged victorious in a highly competitive election against his opponent from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timipre Sylva, in the oil-rich state.
Diri, who assumed office in 2020, received a total of 175,196 votes, while Sylva garnered 110,108 votes. This resulted in a significant margin of victory for the PDP candidate, with a difference of 65,088 votes. The Labour Party (LP) secured a distant third place with a total of 905 votes.
