Nigeria has cut electricity supply to Niamey, the Niger capital, as well as Maradi and Zinder, two other significant cities, over the forcefully taking over of the government by the military junta.

People have access to electricity for roughly an hour at a time before it is cut off for four to five hours.

The West African bloc, Ecowas, placed penalties on Nigeria as part of those, according to the Niger electrical utility, Nigelec, because of the coup.

The main source of electricity for Niger is Nigeria.
