Gen Abdourahamane Tchiani, the coup leader in Niger, has signed an order permitting the military governments of Mali and Burkina Faso to send troops into his nation to help fight against an attack.

The announcement came after Burkina Faso’s Olivia Rouamba and Mali’s Abdoulaye Diop paid a visit to Gen Tchiani in Niamey on Thursday.

The West African regional grouping ECOWAS has threatened to use force to restore Niger’s democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, who was overthrown last month by a handful of army commanders.

It has attempted to talk with the coup leaders, but has warned that if diplomacy fails, it will send troops.
