President Bola Tinubu has suspended Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, from office, effective immediately.
The suspension of the minister was announced by Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale in a statement on Monday afternoon.
The minister, Edu, was involved in a controversy regarding the approval of N585,198,500.00 to be transferred into a personal account.
A letter allegedly signed by the minister instructed the Accountant General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Madein, to transfer the sum to the account of Oniyelu Bridget as grants for vulnerable groups in four states.
However, Madein confirmed that her office received the request but did not take any action on it.
Edu later stated that there were plots to ruin her reputation and that she would not misuse government money.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is now investigating Edu’s predecessor, Sadiya Farouq, for suspected N37.1 billion in laundering while serving as a minister in ex-President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.
