Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, an Islamic cleric based in Kaduna, has stated that security agents are aware of the whereabouts of the bandits causing terror in Nigeria, especially in the northern regions of the country.

Gumi made this revelation during an interview on Nigeria Info FM on Monday evening, mentioning that security agents accompanied him to negotiate with the bandits.

The cleric suggested that the federal government should engage in negotiations with the kidnappers who recently abducted 287 schoolchildren from schools in Kaduna State.

He believes that negotiation is the most sensible approach to ensuring the safe return of the abducted pupils, clarifying that negotiation does not necessarily involve paying money to the kidnappers but could involve exchanging prisoners for captives.

Gumi expressed the view that bandits are marginalised individuals in Nigeria who lack access to education, infrastructure, water, and other basic amenities.

He reiterated his belief that the government should offer bandits amnesty, similar to what was done in the Niger Delta region, to address the insecurity in the North.

In response to questions about why he could easily locate and meet with the bandits while security agents struggled, Gumi emphasised the importance of honesty among security agents, stating that they often follow him to negotiate with the kidnappers.

“I don’t think they (security agents) are truthful with you. When I go, I go with them; I don’t go alone,” he said.
