The Nigerian Senate has passed the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) Bill.
This important bill is designed to improve infrastructure and boost economic growth in the South-East region of Nigeria. It was read for the third time on Thursday.
The goal of the Bill is to tackle the region’s ongoing development challenges, especially those stemming from the Nigerian Civil War. The commission will be responsible for managing funds from the Federation Account to repair and rebuild roads, housing, and other essential infrastructure damaged during the conflict.
The SEDC Bill was passed after a report on the commission’s establishment was presented by Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele. The bill was first introduced by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, and was unanimously approved by the House on December 21, 2023.
After approval by both chambers of the National Assembly, a Conference Committee will be formed to resolve any differences before the bill is sent to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for final approval.
The commission’s main responsibility will be to create, plan, and carry out projects and programs for sustainable development in areas such as transportation, healthcare, education, agriculture, and housing. Additionally, it will work with various stakeholders to tackle ecological and environmental issues, encourage responsible resource management, and guarantee transparency in project execution.
