Heavy fighting is currently taking place in central Somalia as al-Shabab militants launched an attack on military bases in the Mudug region.

According to eyewitnesses, there were reports of intense gunfire and explosions early on Wednesday morning. The assault apparently began with a suicide bombing, specifically targeting government special forces.

According to the BBC, Mohamed Abdi Aden, the Galmudug Security Minister, informed said that the troops are still engaged in combat with the militants in Aad village, where the military bases are situated.

The Somali National News Agency (Sonna) has stated that the army, with the assistance of local residents, successfully repelled the attack and inflicted significant casualties on the terrorists.

However, al-Shabab claims to have captured all five military bases and asserts that they have killed numerous soldiers.

Since August 2022, the Somali federal forces have been carrying out a major offensive against this group, which is linked to al-Qaeda.
