Senate Reacts To Hike In Electricity Tariff

Published:

The Nigerian Senate has responded to the recent hike in electricity tariffs by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Speaking to the media in Abuja on Thursday, Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu told Nigerians that the red chamber would not abandon them to their destiny.

Adaramodu stated that when the upper legislative assembly returns from break, it will vote on the more than 300% rise in energy tariffs for users classified as ‘Band A’.

Adaramodu stated that relevant Senate committees are monitoring the situation and will adopt a position favorable to Nigerians if it resumes.

“The relevant Senate committees on power are studying the situation,” he said.

“You know we are on recess now. When we resume, they will present their findings to the Senate at the plenary. We won’t abandon Nigerians.”

Adaramodu insisted that the Senate would not ignore any policy that increased Nigerians’ economic burden.

Allub Times reports that the federal government, through the NERC, approved a rise in power tariffs for consumers in the ‘Band A’ category who receive 20 hours of daily electrical supply.

Musliu Oseni, NERC vice chairman, stated on Wednesday that Band A users will begin paying N225 per kilowatt hour, up from N66 now.
