The leader of a group in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Edison Ehie, who claims to be the Speaker, has stated that he managed to escape on Sunday following an attack on his home.
Ehie confirmed the attack to Channels Television on Monday morning, saying, “Yes, indeed, it was crazy but my house has been taken over by heavy security and they are doing a security sweep of the whole compound.”
He also mentioned that he will be holding a press conference later in the day.
This response comes after a statement was posted on Facebook.
According to the statement, on Sunday around 11 pm, a group of armed thugs and corrupt police officers, led by a superintendent of police from the CTU B 3 RSV and a chief superintendent of police, attacked Ehie’s residence with the intention of assassinating him and his family.
In Rivers State, a group of criminals and corrupt police officers, led by the two mentioned police officers, attempted to attack the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Barr. Ehie Edison, and his security team. However, the Speaker’s official security details, who are part of the DSSRS, fiercely fought back in a gun battle and successfully repelled the attackers.
In response to this incident, the spokesperson for the police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, stated that the Commissioner of Police (CP) has contacted the officers involved and they will be summoned to the Command Headquarters to meet with the CP.
SP Irifeke London, who previously served as the camp commandant of the Rivers State Government House, was transferred to another position after the current governor was subjected to tear gas.
After the House of Assembly was destroyed by a fire on October 29, Ehie was ousted from his leadership role by lawmakers who supported Martins Amaewhule. However, Ehie fought back and proclaimed himself as the speaker, which led to a serious conflict within the legislative body.
