The Lagos commissioner of police, Adegoke Fayoade, has stated that the command will not allow any disruption of commercial activities during the upcoming protest in the state.
On February 16, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) announced a two-day nationwide protest to highlight the economic challenges in the country. The protest is scheduled to take place on Monday and Tuesday.
The Department of State Services (DSS) advised the NLC to avoid the protest, while the federal government mentioned that the planned demonstration goes against a court order prohibiting the union from going on strike.
In a statement released on Sunday, Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos police, warned that protesters who violate the rights of other Nigerians will face consequences.
“The command will live up to its mandate of ensuring that no person or group of persons is allowed to infringe on the fundamental human rights of others, especially the rights to freedom of movement and right to dignity of human persons,” the statement reads.
“CP Fayoade, therefore, warns all intending protesters that anyone found infringing on the rights of other Nigerians will be dealt with in accordance with the law.”
The spokesperson for the Lagos police department reassured residents that they can go about their daily activities without worrying about being harassed. They also mentioned that security measures have been put in place to ensure everyone’s safety.
