The Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has reassured the public that INTERPOL is close to capturing Nadeem Anjarwalla, the Binance Regional Manager for Africa, who recently escaped from custody in Nigeria.
At a press conference held at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, Egbetokun discussed the escape incident and the challenges faced by the police in fighting crime nationwide.
Anjarwalla, 38, managed to escape on March 22, 2024, from a ‘safe house’ where he was being held along with a colleague.
The circumstances of his escape have raised concerns and prompted a quick response from INTERPOL and the Nigerian police.
“I am not going to tell you what INTERPOL is doing, but I must tell you that we are doing a lot. I can assure you that the suspect would be re-arrested,” stated Egbetokun.
Aside from discussing the escape incident, the IGP also gave a detailed update on the current security situation in Nigeria. He pointed out an increase in kidnapping and murder cases in the last eight weeks.
Police records show that there have been 214 kidnapping cases and 537 homicide cases reported during this time.
Egbetokun also mentioned that 3,685 suspects have been arrested for various crimes, and 401 kidnapped victims have been rescued successfully.
Egbetokun stressed the police’s dedication to taking a proactive and strategic approach to law enforcement. This includes using technology and intelligence to prevent and disrupt criminal activities.
“Through meticulous analysis of available information, we shall endeavour to pre-empt criminal activities, disrupt their illicit networks, and apprehend perpetrators swiftly,” he explained.
