Manchester United are reportedly “pleading” with David de Gea to return, after Andre Onana left them with a difficult dilemma.

The Red Devils are alleged to be planning a humiliating U-turn in goalkeeping, with Premier League heavyweights preparing to roll back the clock. They let Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea depart as a free agent over the summer and then spent £48 million ($58 million) on Cameroon international Onana.

The new No.1 at Old Trafford has struggled to match his predecessor’s performances, with Onana making a number of costly errors until mending his reputation slightly with a crucial stoppage-time penalty save in a Champions League match against FC Copenhagen.

According to The Sun, United are willing to accept that allowing De Gea to depart was a mistake. Attempts are being made to bring the 32-year-old back to Manchester, where he is now without a club. De Gea previously spent 12 years at Manchester United, appearing in 545 games and breaking the club’s all-time clean sheet record.

United are hopeful that De Gea will agree to a short-term contract extension because Onana will be away on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations in January. Altay Bayindir was also signed over the summer, but he is a Premier League rookie, and the Red Devils want another experienced player to cover for, and maybe compete with, Onana.
