Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, showed support for the working class by joining members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in a peaceful protest on Tuesday.
Amidst the nationwide concerns about economic hardship and rising inflation, Makinde’s participation in the protest highlights his administration’s dedication to addressing the people’s issues.
The protest, organized by the NLC state chapter, attracted a large number of workers who started their march from the NLC state secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan.
The procession passed through important locations in the city, including Gate, NTA, and Yemetu roundabout, where Governor Makinde met with the protesters.
Speaking to the demonstrators, Governor Makinde provided words of encouragement, assuring them that the government is fully aware of the challenges faced by the people and is actively working to ease their difficulties.
He stressed that the current economic challenges are temporary and that the government is making every effort to ensure a quick recovery.
The governor said, “I am aware of the hardship in town and the difficulty the people are going through, but I will be part of the generation that will fix the country.”
He reassured the workers that their letters of protest and complaints would be sent to President Bola Tinubu.
The state NLC Chairman, Kayode Martins, had previously mentioned that the cost of living was becoming unbearable, especially for the average person.
He said, “The cost of living in Nigeria today is nothing to write home and the people are fed up, so that’s why we are on the street now.”
