All four British teams were seeded for the draw and will have the advantage of playing the second leg at home.
The matches are scheduled for March 7 and 14.
Liverpool, who have won the competition three times, were the first British team to be drawn.
Jurgen Klopp’s team finished at the top of their group, ahead of Toulouse, Union SG, and LASK. Klopp’s side is aiming to win more European silverware in his final season as manager.
Sparta came in second place to Rangers in the group stage, but secured a spot in the last 16 after a thrilling victory over Galatasaray in the play-offs.
Roberto De Zerbi will return to Italy as Brighton embark on their first-ever European campaign with a match against Roma.
The Italian team, now under the leadership of former player Daniele De Rossi after Jose Mourinho was fired in January, finished as runners-up last season, losing to Sevilla in the final. However, they managed to advance to the last 16 by defeating Feyenoord in a penalty shoot-out on Thursday night.
Brighton secured a spot as one of the seeded teams by finishing first in their group, which included Marseille, Ajax, and AEK Athens.
West Ham will face Freiburg, a team they defeated in both home and away matches during the group stage. The Hammers won 2-1 in Germany and finished at the top of Group A with a 2-0 victory over Olympiacos.
Freiburg, currently in eighth place in the Bundesliga, advanced by beating Lens with an extra-time goal from Michael Gregoritsch.
Rangers, the leaders of the Scottish Premiership, will face a tough opponent in Benfica after winning their group in the group stage.
The Lisbon club moved to the Europa League after coming in third in their Champions League group, behind Real Sociedad and Inter.
They then defeated Toulouse 2-1 in the play-offs. Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, the only team to win all six group stage matches, will play against Qarabag.
AC Milan, last season’s Champions League semi-finalists, will face Slavia Prague. Villarreal, the 2021 Europa League champions, will take on Marseille, while Sporting CP will play against Atalanta.
