Jurgen Klopp stated that Liverpool defender Joel Matip has torn his anterior cruciate ligament and will be sidelined for the rest of the season.
Matip suffered a knee injury in Liverpool’s 4-3 win over Fulham on Sunday, and Klopp was dismissive of his condition, noting after the game and again on Tuesday that things did not seem good. The manager highlighted the severity of the problem following his team’s 2-0 win over Sheffield United on Wednesday.
The news is a major setback for the Anfield club, who also saw Alexis MacAllister forced off with an injury in their midweek victory. Due to injuries, Klopp has already been missing Alisson, Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic, and Andy Robertson.
“It’s an ACL. Ruptured,” Klopp told reporters after Wednesday’s win at Bramall Lane. “That’s unfortunately what I expected from the first second. It looked like that. Very unfortunate, but that’s it.”
In their last five matches in all competitions, the Merseyside team has won four and drawn one. Their next game is at Selhurst Park, where they will face a Crystal Palace squad that has only one point in their past four games.
