Khadija Shaw made history by becoming the highest goal scorer for Manchester City Women after scoring in their 3-1 win against Manchester United.

The victory propelled City to the top of the Women’s Super League table in front of a crowd of 40,086 at the Etihad Stadium. Shaw’s goal, her 68th for City, came early in the second half.

She received a pass from Jess Park near the penalty box, dribbled past defenders, and calmly slotted the ball past United goalkeeper Mary Earps.

City scored their third goal of the afternoon, with Park scoring twice in the first half.

United managed to score an own goal in the 73rd minute, but it was not enough to get back into the game.

Shaw has scored a total of 68 goals for City in just 82 appearances, including 17 goals in the Women’s Super League this season.

Shaw has now scored more goals than Georgia Stanway’s 67 goals in 186 games from 2015 to 2022. Her impressive goal-scoring has helped City reach the top of the table this season with 43 points.

Chelsea is in second place with 40 points, but they have a game in hand against West Ham on Sunday. Both teams have the same goal difference.

United is in fourth place with 28 points, six points behind Arsenal in third. They could drop to fifth if Liverpool beats Everton on Sunday.

Despite the defeat, Red Devils manager Marc Skinner believes the team will improve and bounce back from their setback in the race for the top three spots.

“Pressure is something you have to deal with every day at Manchester United,” he said. “It’s everything we do. Pressure makes you better, it makes you learn, it makes you stronger.

“This club will rise to the levels we all want. I’m a fighter so I’m going to put myself in a position where I can make this team the best in the land. That’s my personal responsibility.”
