Atletico Madrid made an impressive comeback to secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals by defeating Inter Milan 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out in the last 16.
Despite being down 2-0 on aggregate after losing the first leg 1-0 at the San Siro, Inter managed to double their lead with a goal from Federico Dimarco.
However, Atletico fought back, with Antoine Griezmann scoring to equalize just two minutes later, and a late goal from substitute Memphis Depay forced the match into extra time.
Inter suffered a tough loss as Marcus Thuram missed two great chances to score, while Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klaassen had their penalties saved by Jan Oblak.
Inter’s captain, Lautaro Martínez, also missed his penalty, leading to their first defeat of the year at a lively Metropolitano stadium.
Despite Inter’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer saving Saul Niguez’s penalty, it didn’t matter as Atletico Madrid secured their spot in the quarter-finals draw on Friday.
This loss also means the end of Italian teams’ hopes in the tournament this year.
Atletico Madrid now joins Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain in the last eight teams remaining in the competition.
