Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen Shatters Oldest Swimming World Record

In the 800-metre freestyle, Irishman Daniel Wiffen broke the world record for 15 years to win his third gold medal at the European Short Course Swimming Championships on Sunday.

Wiffen broke the sport‘s oldest world record with a time of 7 minutes, 20.46 seconds, besting Australian Grant Hackett‘s 2008 record by nearly three seconds.

In addition to the 400- and 1500-metre freestyle golds he won earlier this week in Otopeni, Romania, the 22-year-old also won the 800-metre title.
