The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, is mourning the loss of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, a Veterinary Technologist who had been caring for the Zoological Garden for over ten years.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday, February 19, 2024, when Mr. Olawuyi was attacked by a 9-year-old male lion while feeding the animals in their enclosure.
The University’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the unfortunate event in a press release.
Despite the brave efforts of other staff members who were present, the attack on Mr. Olawuyi resulted in severe injuries that proved to be fatal.
Upon hearing the distressing news, the University’s management, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE, immediately stopped all ongoing activities to assess the situation in person.
Despite the medical team’s best efforts, as confirmed by Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre, Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, Mr. Olawuyi unfortunately did not survive his injuries.
Following the incident, the aggressive lion responsible for the attack was euthanized by the authorities. Mr. Olawuyi had been caring for the lions since they were born on campus about nine years ago, which makes the tragic circumstances of his death even more heartbreaking.
The University management has sent a delegation to offer condolences to the widow and children of the deceased, encouraging them to find comfort in their faith during this difficult time.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE has also initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident to uncover both its immediate and underlying causes.
The OAU community is mourning the loss of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi and praying for his soul to rest in peace.
