Nigerian veteran actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has broken another record with her latest film titled “A Tribe Called Judah.”
The film has become the first Nollywood movie to generate ₦113 million in its opening weekend, debuting in cinemas on December 15, 2023. Including advanced screenings, the drama, distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, amassed a total of ₦122.7 million.
The movie is centred around brothers involved in a life of crime to save their mother; it attracted 34,996 cinema admissions. If the trend continues, “A Tribe Called Judah” could surpass Akindele’s “Battle on Buka Street” as Nollywood’s highest-grossing film at ₦668.4 million, potentially securing the top three spots alongside her “Omo Ghetto: The Saga” at ₦636.1 million.
In the weekend chart by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), “Ada Omo Daddy,” another December 15 release, followed in second place, grossing ₦27.6 million over the weekend and ₦30.5 million overall with 9,311 cinema admissions.
In third was the Hollywood film “Wonka,” earning ₦6.7 million on its debut, surpassing the MCU’s “The Marvels,” which grossed ₦4.1 million, totaling ₦132 million in six weeks. Closing the top five was Kayode Kasum’s indigenous film “Afamefuna,” which collected ₦3.8 million over the weekend and ₦42.9 million in three weeks.
