Football – Former Zimbabwean goalkeeper George Chigova, aged 32, passed away at his residence in South Africa on Wednesday, as confirmed by Pretoria club SuperSport United.

Chigova had previously suffered a collapse during training with SuperSport last July and had been on leave since then due to a diagnosed heart condition.

Notable moments in his international career include his contribution to Zimbabwe’s journey to the semi-finals of the 2014 African Nations Championship and his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations five years later.

His professional career started in 2010 with Harare Gunners. He then played for Dynamos, which is the most well-known team in Zimbabwe, before joining SuperSport.

Chigova later spent five seasons with Polokwane City in the South African first and second divisions before returning to SuperSport in 2020. His return came just five days after the passing of Rahman Gumbo, a former Zimbabwe midfielder and coach, who died from a heart attack in Botswana.
