The Ekiti State Government has started enforcing the Prohibition of Cattle and Other Ruminants Grazing Law, 2016.
Retired Brigadier General Ebenezer Ogundana, chairman of the Farmers/Herders Peace Committee in Ekiti State, announced this at an event on Wednesday.
Ogundana stressed that the state government will punish anyone who breaks the law. He explained that the goal is to prevent insecurity and damage to farmlands in the state, as unresolved farmer/herder issues could lead to a food crisis for citizens.
Additionally, the Ekiti State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade, stated that the government is dedicated to achieving and maintaining food security in the state.
He urged herders to responsibly manage their cattle and live harmoniously with crop farmers. He cautioned that any damage to crops, farmlands, or properties by herders would not be accepted.
The anti-open grazing law bans grazing at night, carrying firearms or weapons, and damaging properties or farmlands with cattle.
