The Kano State Police Command has discovered individuals hiding under certain Islamic sects to create chaos during the Eid-el-Fitr festival.
During a meeting with Islamic clerics and representatives from the five emirate councils on Monday, Police Commissioner Muhammad Gumel made this announcement.
He also reassured everyone that the police had taken swift action against criminals pretending to be law-abiding citizens to cause trouble before, during, and after the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
He pointed out that Kano is the only state where none of its citizens have been kidnapped or held captive by bandits, which he credited to the vigilance of security agencies.
“We have some names that hide under the guise of the Qadiriyya Islamic sect, trying to cause disharmony.
“So, we have spoken with the leader of the sect, Sheikh Qaribullah Nasiru Kabara, and he has dissociated himself from them and even given the go-ahead to arrest anyone trying to disrupt peace,” he said.
The police commissioner mentioned that the intelligence units of the command had discovered a group of politicians who were unhappy with the current situation or did not receive appointments, alleging that the politicians were determined to create chaos.
“I have directed police officers to arrest anybody they find with weapons or trying to create uncertainty among the people,” he added.
Retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Bashir Albasu, who represented the Emir of Bichi, praised the police commissioner for maintaining peace in Kano.
He recognized the diverse population of Kano, the continuous arrival of traders, and the city’s vulnerability to crime. However, he assured that the five emirate councils were committed to supporting security efforts to ensure lasting peace.
