The Federal High Court in Ikoyi has instructed the administration led by President Bola Tinubu to regulate the prices of necessary goods and petroleum products within a week.
The ruling was made in response to a legal motion filed by human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, who criticized the government’s lack of action on price control.
Justice Ambose Lewis-Allagoa, who oversaw the case, acknowledged that there was no opposition from the Attorney-General of the Federation or the Price Control Board. He considered the information presented by Falana as accepted and granted all the requested reliefs in the motion.
Granting the order, the judge said, “I have heard the applicant, Femi Falana, in a suit no. FHC/L/CS/869/2023, and I have also discovered that despite the service of the originating motion on the respondents, namely the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Price Control Board, there is no opposition to it by way of counter affidavit, which is law that all the facts deposed in the affidavit attached to the originating motion are all deemed admitted.
“Consequently, all prayers that are sought for in the motion papers are hereby granted as prayed.”
The judge has instructed the Nigerian Government to establish fixed prices for various essential items such as milk, flour, salt, sugar, bicycles and their spare parts, matches, motorcycles and their spare parts, motor vehicles and their spare parts, as well as petroleum products like diesel, petrol motor spirit (PMS), and kerosene.
