Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri To Face Calderano In Opening Round Of The WTT Finals
The number one ranked table tennis player in Africa, Quadri Aruna, will take on Hugo Calderano of Brazil on Wednesday in the opening round of the WTT Finals Men Doha 2023 in Qatar.
The Nigerian will be hoping for a turnaround when the two continental rulers square off at the Lusail Sports Arena, having lost their previous matches with the Brazilian superstar.
As the underdog going into the match, Quadri will be looking to continue his incredible WTT Series year against the World No. 5 from Brazil, who has a 2-0 record against the African monarch.
WTT claims that since the two have been practicing together for the past few days of their trip in Doha, they should be well-prepared to face off, and fans should be in for a treat when they take centre stage on the first day of competition.
In addition to making it to the quarterfinals in his first match, Quadri is the only African to have competed in the year-ending WTT Finals since the competition’s inception in 2021.
He defeated China‘s Liang Jingkun, the world number six at the time, 3-1 in an intense match held in Singapore. However, Quadri was eliminated in the opening round of the 2022 edition.
In addition to trying to outperform himself in 2021, Aruna will be striving for ranking points in order to strengthen his world ranking before the French Olympic qualifying event in Paris in 2024.
WTT Men’s Final The WTT Series 2023 will culminate in Doha, which will provide a $340,000 prize pool and 1500 World Ranking points for the victor of the men’s singles.
