Andy Murray has revealed that he will be taking a break for a long period of time due to ruptured ankle ligaments he suffered during his Miami Open match against Tomas Machac on Sunday.
The 36-year-old former world No. 1 was having a good tournament, reaching the third round in Florida. Despite winning the first set against his Czech opponent, he ultimately lost 5-7 7-5 7-6.
Murray required treatment during the final set and shared the extent of his injury on his Instagram account the following day.
“Yesterday towards the end of my match in Miami I suffered a full rupture of my ATFL [anterior talofibular ligament] and near full thickness rupture of my CFL,” he said.
“I will see an ankle specialist when I return home to determine next steps. Goes without saying this is a tough one to take and I’ll be out for an extended period. But I’ll be back with 1 hip and no ankle ligaments when the time is right.”
Murray did not provide any additional information about his potential return to court. However, due to the seriousness of the issue, his summer plans are now uncertain.
Many had thought this could be Murray’s final year in professional tennis. He had hoped to compete at Wimbledon and secure a spot on Team GB for the Olympics in Paris.
This latest injury may be too much for the experienced player to overcome. After hip surgery in 2019, Murray’s performance declined, and he has struggled to achieve the success he once had, winning only a few titles since his comeback.
