The Coalition of Middle Belt Groups (CMBG) has expressed concern that Nigeria is moving towards becoming a one-party state under President Bola Tinubu‘s leadership.

The group believes that the removal of opposition party members from their positions is part of a larger plan to establish a one-party dictatorship.

CMBG’s statement comes in response to recent court rulings that have resulted in the removal of lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party in Plateau State from the national assembly.

Reacting to the situation, Ben Omale, the convener of the group, expressed his dismay at the alleged attempts by what he referred to as anti-democratic forces to destabilize Plateau State and, consequently, the entire country.

Omale voiced his concerns during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday. He specifically highlighted his worry regarding the praise received from certain groups, notably the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State, who commended the court rulings as a demonstration of democracy in action.

Part of the statement reads, “What should scare Nigerians and the world at large, gentlemen of the press, is that they plan to implement this playbook in other non-APC states in order for the party to control all the states of the Federation in the next eighteen months. In this, the Middle Belt is particularly endangered because we will bear the brunt of any resulting insecurity from this criminal experiment they are performing with Nigeria’s democracy.”
