The Super Falcons of Nigeria were unable to defeat Cameroon in the first leg of the 2024 Women’s Olympic football qualification third round.
Coach Randy Waldrum took the Super Falcons to Douala, Cameroon, for the match, expecting them to come back to Nigeria with three points based on their recent good form.
Prior to this match, the Super Falcons had won three games in a row. They defeated Ethiopia 4-0 on October 31, 2023, Cape Verde 5-0 on November 30, 2023, and Cape Verde again 2-1 on December 5 in the return leg of the Olympics qualifiers.
However, their trip to Douala did not go as planned. Nigeria’s women’s team had several throw-ins during the game, but they were unable to capitalize on them.
In the 27th minute of the game, Nigeria’s midfielder, Toni Payne, had the best opportunity to score a goal, but she missed the chance.
Cameroon also had a chance to score in the first half, but goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie stopped their attempt.
In the second half, the Cameroonian team played better with the support of their fans, but they couldn’t score.
Despite both teams trying to score, Nigeria’s goal was disallowed for being offside. The first leg of the 2024 Women’s Olympic football qualification third round ended in a 0-0 draw.
The return leg will take place at the Abuja National Stadium on Monday, February 26, 2024, at 4 p.m. A winner must be determined in this match.
The winning team will be one of the African representatives at the 2024 Olympics in Paris this summer.
